I've heard some success stories of people just putting up a proxy, stumbling it, and getting thousands of visitors.

Has anyone had any luck with that?

Nope, not me. And I think these are more rare stories you hear of wild success but you never hear of the failures. Usually it take time, effort and money.

Maybe if you combine stumble + digg + other free resources?

not really actually , tried to make lots of stumbling exchanges and gots tens if not hundreds of stumbles and it didn't bring that much traffic , i'd say it wasn't exactly worth it

That is my story with unblock6.com which got up to 4000 visits & about $15 1 day & i did not advertise because it is bringing traffic. Holidays was worst but now again getting 1000+ uniques daily. that was due to catchy easy domain unblock6.com(about a month old). They remembered it. I've other proxies & get only 200-400 uniques even after a lot of promotion.
